Tel Aviv

You know when you go to the airport in Israel and they search through your bags, running all of your possessions, individually, through the x-ray machine? twice? And then when they're done with that they take you to that little room where they ask you to walk back and forth through the metal detector, taking off items of clothing until it stops beeping?
Did you know that there's a secret button somewhere in that room? And if you press it four undercover Israeli security guards with radios and guns come storming into your little metal detector room and no one says anything for a second and you think you're about to get hauled off to airport prison because you forgot to take the pack of gum out of your pocket and that's what kept beeping even though you had already taken off your shoes and belt and were wondering what else you could take off given that that curtain over the doorway was ridiculously small and kept flapping open anyway? Well, don't worry. They won't haul you away. And when you ask the guard who was supervising your trips through the metal detector, he'll just tell you that no, you're not in trouble, but that button sure is sensitive...

Yo MacLash,

i've tried everything except the "sensitive button" part. during the whole metal detector part i was afraid they would follow it up by a cavity search. when the airport security dude was walking me to my gate, i genuily tried to befriend him and he basically thought i was a idiot - which some people would argue that i am. i hope you were walked to the gate by a nicer person.

peace

i've had the whole experience except for the gum wrapper bit. and the secret button part also. it helps a bit if your wires come out in the wash, as a woman.

airport security is also not so much fun for an armenian/persian with an NZ passport with pakistan visa stamps in it who also has a passion for gadgetry goodness.

just ask my in-laws who had to hang back while airport security (both into israel, out of israel and into the states) asked me all sorts of questions ranging from what my dad does for a living (so tempted to say something obnoxious at this point...how about bomb maker extraordinnaire) and why no one funded this sketchy sounding documentary i was mking in pakistan (uhm, yeah I also have beef with this people, thanks for reminding me!)

i must say, US security was probably the most patronising. plus they stole my perssimons.
